Kirhat's Seek No More in Typhoon Frank Hits My Beloved Iloilo.

In-Kind Donations
All efforts to provide help and support will be appreciated. Monetary donations can provide the fastest and effective delivery to those in need. All donations (food, clothes, medicines, monetary assistance) will go directly to a radio station (I have chosen Aksyon Radyo). They will use your donations to get rice, canned goods, noodles and bulk foodstuffs which will be distributed to those people who are affected. I will have it documented here.

Thank You!

Worried Daughter

I got a phone call from Joy Indico Horton from Australia. She wanted to know if her parents and relatives are OK in Tabuc Suba, Jaro. I learned from her that she and her husband were trying to call the land phones of her parents and cellphone of her sister for two nights already. But they couldn't get through. So while she was browsing the net last night, she stumbled upon my blog and immediately called me, and asked about Iloilo's situation. And so i did inform her. I got her parents and sister's contact numbers and tried calling them right away.. just after we hung up. I couldn't get through as well.

I tried calling those numbers again this morning, and luckily I have talked to her sister. She told me that they are all safe in their parent's house. Communication were down. Still no power in their area, so they were not able to charge their cellphones. I was about to email Joy, when she IM-ed me. I was then talking to her husband and he told me she was on the phone with her sister. Whew! That's good news. I'm glad Joy's worry has ended.

I also learned from Joy's husband that they have been helping people. Especially the kids in the village where Joy's mom grew up. God Bless their human goodness.

One Year Na Kami!

Life is great because I have my Hecky poo with me. More memories to share, more love to feel.

Thank You for being a part of our love story. ONE YEAR na kami! Yay!

Typhoon Frank Lashes Iloilo

Typhoon Frank hit Iloilo on Saturday, June 21, 2008. 34, 000 individuals are affected (and counting), and 73 were reported dead (and could rise further). For the record, this is the worst disaster in Iloilo.

Our Home

For the first time in history, the first floor of our house were flooded. The knee-length flood hit our home around 6pm. We had to take all of our stuffs and appliances up to the 2nd floor for safety. My parents room is in the 1st floor, so my Mom slept in my brother's room, while my dad and my brother didn't sleep the whole night waiting for the next thing that could possibly happen. We had to call our neighbor's children to come up to the 2nd floor and we let them stayed in my room and in my sister's room. If the flood could have risen up to the 2nd floor, (which is quite impossible, yet possible) my mom's plan was to evacuate the area and get a hotel room. Good thing the flood subsided around 4am.

Communication

PECO was forced to cut down the power. My cellphones were running out of batteries. My Globe phone was the first to ran out of batteries. so i had to switch my sim card to my Smart cellphone which was about to go battery empty. What I did was to put it on and off after 10 minutes just to conserve it's battery for emergency purposes. I didn't want to lose communication with Hectril because they were stranded in SM City around 1pm until today. The last text I got from him was from 7am today, saying they are still stranded and he's running out of batteries. Landlines were also dead (both Globelines and PLDT), so there were no means to contact our other relatives who I believe were affected by flood. And whallah! the power were restored in our area at exactly 10am.

The Flood Zone

In the flood zone, were people evacuating, and many were stranded. Authorities had barred all traffic into the city. There were reports of deaths, people stranded, flood, and reports of people killing others just for food. The heavy rain batted the city which have caused to flood, and a very strong wind that downed trees that blocked some roadways. The typhoon left people homeless, desperate for food, water, clothes and medicine.

The most affected areas (for what I know) are Pavia, Jaro, La Paz, Mandurriao. And in some provinces. We live in Molo, reports said, our town is not that much affected. Some areas are, but not really.

The Affected People

Most people around the city walked out the storm, some rode out of their homes, some were stranded on their rooftops. These people were queued up before other people who are not affected. They are hungry, thirsty, worried and terrified. Those whose homes had been destroyed were left to wonder at the random nature of disaster that spared some of their neighbors houses just a few meters away.

The After-Math

The evacuees gathered around our baranggay hall and Day Care Center, complained angrily that food supplies haven't arrived yet. I could hear some people complaining that vice mayor Jed Mabilog, who happens to live near our baranggay didn't do anything to help these people out. And that Mayor Jerry Treñas is still in Kuala Lumpur.

My parents have decided to cook miswa (rice noodles.. or is it?) and pancit molo to those evacuees. I also had to raid my closet for my unused clothes and blanket that I intend to distribute. I texted a friend who lives in Southville Subdivision if she has unused clothes that she could hand down. Good thing she had to come over and helped. Others then followed, giving the rest of their foods and water to squatters in the Baranggay Hall. Few minutes later, food and water from organizations were loaded in. People were heated, shouting and swearing for the situation.

Volunteers loaded in more foods and medicines. There were also cops, fire trucks and army trucks checking for the area and for people. I've talked to one of the cops, and they said they had been spending 24 hours doing a lot of monitoring, identifying areas of great need and making contacts to help avoid conflicts or riots that may possibly happen to desperate crowds.

THIS IS WHAT ILOILO has become. A typhoon hits, the city floods, and humanity was put into test. Black turns into white, white turns into black. This story will never die.

For every rich people enjoys the luxury of life, there were a lot of stranded victims who could share their last bottle of water. For every ideologue who designates the efforts of volunteers, there are a lot of people who will sacrifice to help others... even to visit an evacuation center to deliver food and clothing to those in need. For every person despairing for their loss, there are dozens returning with humor and the hope to rebuild.

Of course, there is confusion, corruption, incompetence and fear. But there is also human goodness, and that is what will stand.

If you are living in Iloilo City, and want to donate food, clothes and medicine, please contact your Baranggay Captain or Chairman.

The Wonders of Reality

I've recently had encountered quite a few unexpected and dismaying events. Almost all of them were unavoidable personal, work and financial issues. I had lunch with my boyfriend when we talked about issues with his work. He didn't really talk much about it.. but I know what's going on. I know it had to be so difficult for him to have to look me in the eyes and tell me all that, but in that moment all I could care about was him and his pain from feeling like he is letting his own self down. or letting me down. But this man has NEVER let me down, and probably never will. He was still not OK after having lunch..however, I know he'd be feeling better when the day ends.

Amidst the problem that is our everyday life, we are uncustomary sedate. Perhaps we are just kidding ourselves and in actuality we are simply detached from reality, but at any rate we are extremely grateful for our composure, especially considering our formidable circumstances.

Things will change dramatically around here as we both want to change our lifestyle. One will have to support the other and vice versa. And our dreams of becoming something more will never be put on hold.

Argh... well, such is life. It's rough, but we've been through much worse before and survived and I have complete faith that we can pull through this and become better and stronger individuals in the end.

Here's our first picture together. Dated June of 2007.

That's his yellow jerseys he he he. We are a cute couple.

Russian Climbing - Parkour

If you haven't watched this video.. WTF! You'd bow to the amazement of "Le Parkour."

Parkour (French) a.k.a free running in English.
And in South Korea, they use the term Yamakasi, which is from Lingala language and is spoken is Congos. Ya makási can mean 'strong body, strong spirit, strong person'.
In the Philippines, we call it.. the Akyat-Bahay. Hahaha!

Trivia time:
Inventor of a discipline known as Parkour, which consists of moving quickly and efficiently in any environment, using only the abilities of the human body. Yahn and Frederic Hnautra, David Malgogne, Stephane Vigroux Kazuma, and Sébastien Foucan are some the very first traceurs (as parkour practitioners are called), who happened to be David Belle's close friends.

Paradise Lost

The past few days have been boring, so I was just reading the Reader's Digest, Magazines, newspapers and what interests me most is reading the book Paradise Lost.

And so I checked google.
This is the book cover of the 2005 Hackett Edition, with illustrations from the 1688 edition. See Wikipedia.

First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is considered to be the greatest epic poem in English literature. Written in twelve books, the blank verse poem tells the biblical story of Adam and Eve's fall from grace and subsequent expulsion from Paradise. In sublime poetry of extraordinary beauty, Milton creates a rich and complex Christian mythology that has inspired countless writers and artists. It continues to be required reading in high school and college literature courses and is a long-standing favorite with lovers of English poetry."

What we have at home is just a photocopy of these 12 books, which mom borrowed from their school, (aha!.. unauthorized publication huh, hehehe sshhh). Anyway, the book is incredible! There are so many lines and ideas in it that have echoed throughout Western culture.

And Milton's interpretation of the Bible is the one that has stuck in the popular imagination- Lucifer as the rebellious angel banished to Hell, who tempted Eve and the as vengeance against GodMessiah.. the war in Heaven... the concept of "true" love being without lust. It makes me shiver about every other page because I read a line that I've read or heard so many other places, or a concept comes across that I always took as Biblical truth that it turns out was mainly Milton's conception of the Biblical truth.

So my personal views about the book is.. Lucifer, for a variety of reasons, resembles many modern anti-heroes. And as a modern person, it's hard to sympathize with the all perfect angels, Jesus, and God in the book. They don't make mistakes, they don't question their creator, they don't want anything but what they've got. Satan wants to know more, or at least convinces other characters that they want to know more. What was it that Eve got in exchange for Paradise? Not riches, not beauty, not pleasure....but she got knowledge. How did Satan convince the other angels to rebel against God? He convinced them that they were, or might be, their own creators. that the story God had always told them might very well not be true. He is a questioner, a wonderer, an explorer.

I'm only halfway through, I'm still reading the poem. I'm sure I'll post more about this as i read on, but here are two of the lines that have been repeating in my head since I read them.

"Farewell happy fields, where Joy forever dwells- Hail, horrors, hail."
"Abashed, the Devil stood, and felt how awful goodness was."

P.S.
I'm still a believer of God, though.

Sazzy Jobby

Alright, I admit it.

Today has been a little rough. I was trying to hold out blogging again until tomorrow, but alas, I just gotta vent first. I am a little bit bored. But my job was even more boring, so I'm really not complaining!

I missed another phone call yesterday from the company I applied for. I was hoping they would call again an hour after that, but hell... they didn't. I just also wanted to know if I did well with my medical/physical exam. Darnit, I was in the bathroom when my cellphone rang. Ugh.. they should know that. hahaha.

I guess this whole job thing has got me thinking, and everyone knows thinking is no good for anybody! It only gets you into trouble, my friends.

And that's about it.

WHEEEEE!

Shake Your Tail Bone

Today, I accompanied my Hecky poo to the doctor. He is currently suffering from a deep ache around the coccyx [a.k.a tail bone].

I mentioned from my previous post that he went for a photoshoot somewhere in Guimaras on Saturday. So what happened was, while he was busy taking pictures of the place, he slipped and his tail bone hit a big rock. Good thing he is taking Ponstan to minimize the pain (somehow).

This is what a tail bone looks like:

So right now, he is still suffering from pain during and after sitting. The pain depends on how he sits. The doctor said it is really not a "weak bearing", since a tail bone doesn't really play an important role in the body (unless you have a tail). The doctor advised him to take pain killers, (like mefenamic acid, Ponstan, etc.) and get himself a "donut" (something that he could sit on to make him sit comfortably).

I hope the pain that he is suffering won't persist for a long time. Because we still got some important stuffs to do.
